USTMA Celebrates Manufacturing Day

October 6, 2017

U.S. Tire Manufacturing Industry Powers the Economy, Fosters Innovation, and Enhances Communities

The U.S. tire manufacturing industry provides jobs, fosters innovation and provides a positive influence in local communities, according to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA).

The group is celebrating Manufacturing Day, an annual event designed to amplify the voice of individual manufacturers and bring together a chorus of manufacturers with shared concerns and challenges across the nation.

U.S. tire manufacturing is a $148 billion industry that is responsible for more than 737,000 jobs in the U.S. It directly supports more than 284,000 U.S. jobs through manufacturing, distribution and retailing, and is responsible for more than 450,000 additional U.S. jobs in supplier and induced activities.

“Tire manufacturing provides well-paying jobs with opportunities for advancement, and delivers economic output that ripples across the U.S. economy and helps sustain communities,” said Anne Forristall Luke, USTMA president and CEO. “These jobs enable factory workers, engineers, scientists and others to unlock the value of a mobile society by producing advanced, high-quality products that are indispensable to the mobility of people and goods.”

USTMA is working to educate policymakers about the industry’s economic impact and to highlight tire technology, engineering and innovation.

The group recently launched its inaugural Tire Ambassador Program in which participating USTMA members selected an individual employee to participate in a two-day event in Washington, D.C. to engage with congressional staff about the value that tire manufacturers deliver to national, state and local communities.

The Tire Manufacturing Ambassadors met with more than a dozen congressional offices that represent USTMA members. Tire Ambassadors explained their respective roles in the company and the contributions that tire manufacturer facilities make to local communities.

“Our Tire Manufacturing Ambassadors reflect the best and brightest in the industry,” Luke said. “From engineers to chemists to technicians to production line managers and beyond, our people are passionate about making safer and more sustainable tires and keeping the American economy moving. They are among the many workers in our industry to which the next generation of workers should aspire.”
